We hear you asking, "Where do I start?"

“What can I do?” Is a question we often hear when there’s an uprising or another police killing.

The truth is, we’ve done a lot.

We have elected representatives into office who are on the front lines of the movement against anti-police terror. We’ve changed laws and given land back. We are fielding reparations councils across the US.

So. Now what?

I've been in activism and liberation work my whole life, and my life as a Black trans person often requires activism.

This course is the work of years of conversations with Black folks, non-Black POCs, and white folks who want to help dismantle the systems of oppression that kill Black and Indigenous people.

We want to help folks become the allies and accomplices they have always wanted to be, in ways that are sustainable, accountable, and joy-filled.

We know that the work of undoing racism and colonialism in ourselves and in our infrastructure is the work of years, and that folks need partnership and instructions on how to go about it.

As many of us are watching a seeming descent into fascism and terror we thought were impossible, we are rededicating ourselves to the work of making the positive shifts of the last few years stick, and growing them into a movement where no one is left behind.

And we are dedicated to doing it in life-giving ways, that honor the relationships we have built across movements, across race and class and culture. This work is dedicated to the #BlackPanthers and the #RainbowCoalition work that minister Fred Hampton Senior spoke about. It’s dedicated to Black feminists like Kimberlé Crenshaw and Assata Shakur who resist state terror AND the logic of patriarchy. It’s dedicated to the Zapatista movement and their continuous example of living in harmony with the earth. It’s dedicated to #Landback and to Ohlone Leadership, and learning how to #ComeCorrect.

We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.

This workshop is the way we begin.

What's Included in the Course?

  • This course is for folks who are dedicated to dismantling anti-Black racism and to Indigenous freedom. It is not a “devil’s advocate” course to convince people, but rather a place for folks who are already convinced to learn how to do deep solidarity work.
  • Every course participant will learn how to build a land and people acknowledgement practice
  • Every course participant will learn how to build relationships with their ancestors and will be able to scaffold those relationships into powerful connections with themselves and their community
  • Experience, knowledge and skills from educators and activists on the frontline of the Black liberation and Land and Water Protector movements
  • A practice community of other anti-racist and anti-colonialist activists who are as deeply committed to doing the work as you are
  • Skills, practice, and support as you heal from the practice of colonialism and build your anti-racist skills and process generational trauma through the lens of liberation philosophy and body-based healing and forgiveness practices
  • Each course participant will also receive access to study group and office hours with the instructors and other activists, facilitators, and educators
  •
  • In a country founded on the myth of white supremacy, an economic system founded on slave capitalism and a marketing system based on rape patriarchy and land theft, we have to go against the tide, on purpose. Otherwise we will be replicating those systems, even if we are good people who don't want to or mean to.

FAQ

What is PEACE Out Loud?

Peace, Education, Arts & Creation for Everyone.

Peace Out Loud is based in South Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco, California and is a neighborhood social permaculture project of building self-determined community through youth programs and adult coaching programs. As educators, we are committed to creating the conditions for all families to comfortably grow into being their full selves.  As social permaculturists, we identify the needs in our community and co-create programs in response to those needs. Our team is composed of Black, Brown, queer, trans and poor people with a passion for care, social justice and playfulness!

Peace Out Loud was started by Ira X Armstrong, an activist, educator, organizer and social permaculturist. They are the child of a Black revolutionary/former Black Panther father and a white abolitionist Unitarian Universalist Mother. Ira has worked as an educational anthropologist and activist with over 20 years of experience as an educator. They have taught and begun music, dance, garden, coaching, and musical theater programs in Alameda, Oakland, Berkeley, and Los Angeles unified school districts, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, churches, the YMCA, and street parties up and down the 101 and back.

Peace Out Loud is for obliterating all forms of oppression. Our courses are not for those who are queerphobic, transphobic, homophobic, fatphobic, abelist, unless you are here because you are seeking to unpack and undo those forms of oppression. We do not believe that one form of oppression can be undone while oppressing other groups. We are for complex and nuanced conversations around challenging and often emotionally charged areas of life. You are responsible for taking care of yourself as you engage in this work and in these group dynamics and discussions.

Our organization Peace Out Loud also offers a series of free healing sessions, a Bail Fund, and cash relief for BIPOC Activists who have been tirelessly showing up during this critical historical time.
We invite you to help fund and support these offerings by donating any amount below.
